About Usatine Media

Usatine Media was founded in 2010 by Dr. Richard Usatine and software developer Peter Erickson. We are a unique app development company that is a partnership between a software engineer and a physician author. We specialize in turning medical content into interactive apps for the iPhone and iPad, as well as Android devices. We have a variety apps on the market based on our partnerships with McGraw-Hill and Elsevier. Our first app was based on the best-selling book “The Color Atlas of Family Medicine” written by Dr. Richard Usatine and his colleagues.

About Dr. Richard P. Usatine

Dr. Richard P. Usatine is a Professor of Family and Community Medicine and Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery. He is Assistant Director of Medical Humanities Education at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He received his MD from Columbia University and completed his family medicine residency at UCLA Medical Center. He is the co-author of 9 medical/healthcare books and over 100 articles. He has won numerous teaching awards and loves teaching medical students to become compassionate doctors.

Dr. Usatine has been working with medical students to provide health care to homeless families and the medically underserved since 1984. He was the medical director of 4 free clinics for homeless individuals and families in Los Angeles. Dr. Usatine co-founded the medical student-run clinic at Alpha Home that opened in January of 2005. Dr. Usatine was recognized in 2000 as the national recipient of the Humanism in Medicine Award, by the Association of American Medical Colleges. He created a Humanism in Medicine Fellowship for medical students that work throughout their senior year at the Alpha Home Clinic and the SAMM transitional living and learning center for homeless families. In 2008, Dr. Usatine won the Volunteer of the Year Award from the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County in the category of Individual in Service to an Agency.

Dr. Usatine is the founder and medical director of the University Health System Skin Clinic in San Antonio. He is a board-certified family physician with special training and interest in dermatology. He is the national chair of the yearly Skin Course put on by the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Usatine is the founder of the Interactive Dermatology Atlas on the web http://www.dermatlas.net and the creator of Photo Rounds in the Journal of Family Practice, in which images and stories are combined to teach pearls of clinical medicine. Dr. Usatine is also a contributor to the Watch and Learn video library for the Journal of Family Practice Online. Since 2000, he has been chosen yearly by his peers to be included in The Best Doctors in America. Dr. Richard Usatine has been involved in Global Health through his work in Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, Haiti and Ethiopia.
